Calvin Woodrow Miller was born to Ed and Edna (Clement) Miller on April 30, 1925, on a farm in Lucas County, Iowa, near the village of Purdy. He attended "Brush College", a country school, until moving with his parents to Buena Vista County while in the 8th grade. He graduated from the consolidated school at Sulphur Springs in 1942.

Bud rented a farm prior to his senior year in high school and continued farming until 1956, less the two years serving as a tank commander in the "Hell on Wheels", 2nd armored division during the Korean War.

Bud and Shirley Nielsen were married on September 17, 1950, at the Methodist Church in Aurelia, Iowa. To this union, one son and three daughters were born.

In 1956, Bud and Shirley sold their farm and moved to Dayton where they owned and operated the Starline Roller Rink. After selling the rink he sold John Hancock Life Insurance until he became employed by the Iowa Department of Transportation in 1973 as a buyer of land and right of ways for new and improved highways. He retired in 1989, becoming a house husband while Shirley continued her work as city clerk of Dayton.

Bud was active in the Dayton Golf & Country Club, serving as president and clubhouse manager, conducting a lot of activities and tournaments for many years.

He enjoyed his retirement by playing more golf and planning 3-day tri-annual reunions for about 25 of his army buddies and their wives. Another joy of Bud's was planning extended trips covering most of the United States for Shirley and himself and other family members

Bud is survived by his son, Michael and his wife Julie of Arnolds Park, Iowa; daughters, Leatha and her husband Ron Henderson of Ames, Iowa, Cara of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Jan and her husband Ron Hoffman of Remsen, Iowa; seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Bud was preceded in death by his beloved, Shirley in 2008, and his parents, one brother, and four sisters.
