Irene M. Wenger

Irene M. Wenger, 94, of Beaver, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 30th, 2014, at Zion Lutheran Church in Ogden. Pastor Wade Brandt will officiate. Burial will be in the Beaver Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 4:00 until 9:00 p.m., with family present to greet friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m., at Zion Lutheran Church. Irene May Hess was born on July 22, 1919, in Paton, Iowa, the daughter of Robert Edward and Matilda Sophia (Haase) Hess. She graduated with the Dana High School class of 1937.

On December 13, 1937, Irene was united in marriage to Eldon Leslie Wenger in Davenport, Iowa. The couple lived on a farm north of Jefferson before moving to Des Moines, and later lived in Port Orchard, Washington. From 1944 to 1946, Eldon served his country in the United States Army. Irene was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson where she and the children lived while Eldon was in the service. Shortly after Eldon returned from the service, they moved 1 ½ miles north of Beaver. Later they moved into Beaver. Eldon, Irene and family were in the trucking business since 1946. The couple owned & operated Wenger Truck Line, Inc, which later became Beaver Truck Line, Inc. They had offices in Beaver, Ogden, Omaha, and Chicago, and hauled livestock, grain, and steel. For over 40 years Irene was office manager and answered phones around the clock. The couple also owned and operated Wenger Farms Inc. Eldon passed away on November 19, 2000.

Irene belonged to Zion Lutheran Church in Ogden. She was great about keeping in touch with classmates and printing class books for special years. Irene and Eldon enjoyed attending the Dana Alumni Banquet. Irene also enjoyed Lawrence Welk, country music, bingo, solitaire, and watching sports. Irene and Eldon made many lasting friendships over the years through several activities including winters spent in Arizona.

Among the survivors are three children, Colleen I. (William H.) Radebaugh of Grand Junction, Iowa, Eldo E. (Pam) Wenger of Stockton, California, and Jacqueline J. (Roger A.) Sturtz of Humboldt, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; one sister, Arline Robbins of Jefferson, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Eldon Wenger, one brother, Melvin Hess, two sisters, Evelyn Wenger and Marjorie Smalley, her son, Roger Wenger, granddaughter, Lisa Wenger, great grandson, Jeremiah Wenger, and a granddaughter-in-law, Anne Wenger.

Memorials may be left to Zion Lutheran Church.
