John Nolan Malmquist, son of Carl and Elsie (Nolan) Malmquist, was born September 20, 1928 in Boxholm, Iowa, and died December 19, 2009 in Boone at the age of 81 years.
John graduated from Boxholm High School in 1946, and attended Wartburg College. He joined the United States Army in January of 1951 and served in Korea until his discharge in November of 1952.
John married Nancy Boyle on June 12, 1955 at Penn Center church near Earlham. He was appointed postmaster in Boxholm in December of 1955, an office he served in until his retirement in May of 1987.
John organized a Cub Scout troop in Boxholm, and was a longtime member of the Boxholm Community Club. He served as committee chair for the Boxholm 50th anniversary celebration, as a member of the Boxholm fire department for 34 years, and of the Boxholm United Methodist Church for 67 years. John enjoyed his participation in the Tri-county Postmasters group, the Boone County Historical Society and several philatelic societies. He was President of the Iowa branch of the National League of Postmasters in 1960-1961, and held several other offices and committee memberships through his years of service. John enjoyed gardening, fishing, traveling, stamp collecting, woodworking, hunting and trap shooting, spending time with his grandchildren, and corresponding since 1955 with pen pals in England.
John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nancy, sons David (Ruth) of Prairie City, Steven of Nevada, and Richard (Deidre) of Stanhope, and grandchildren Nolan and Allison Malmquist. He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Elsie Malmquist.
