Joseph Harley Saunders

Joseph Harley Saunders, 84, of Ogden, IA, passed away on May 27, 2018 at The Madrid Home in Madrid, IA.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 4, 2018, at the Community United Methodist Church in Ogden. Rev. Gary Hoyt will officiate. Burial will be at Quincy Cemetery, rural Boone. He was born on September 16, 1933, to Joseph Henry and Florence Emma (Enfield) Saunders in Bradgate, IA. He moved to the Ogden area as a child and graduated from Ogden High School in 1952. On June 6, 1954, Harley was united in marriage to Donna Katherine Alexander at the Battin Chapel.

Harley was a farmer, worked for ASCS and FSA, was a trustee for Marcy Township and retired in 1999. He was a very devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Harley enjoyed spending time with his family and friends who he kept very close. He had a passion for watching the Steelers, fishing, hunting mushrooms and asparagus, baseball, and fast pitch softball. He was a table tennis tournament champion and on the state tournament basketball team in 1952. Harley was very willing to help anyone in need and was a member of the Community United Methodist Church.

Harley is preceded in death by his wife, Donna; parents, Joseph and Florence Saunders as well as his father and mother-in-law, Don and Bessie Alexander; four sisters, Genevieve Petrie, Marjorie Christensen, Kathryn Dennis and Nila Clemens and one brother-in-law, Ivan Alexander, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Harley is survived by his three sons, Randy & (Tina) Saunders of Ogden, IA, Neil Saunders of Ogden, IA, Grant Saunders of Ogden, IA; two daughters, Brenda Fisher of Ogden, IA, and Teresa (Craig) Davenport of Ogden, IA; grandchildren: Christopher & Amelia Saunders of Boone, IA, Andrea and Josh Clauson of Boone, IA, Lindsay and Dan Cox of Gilbert, IA, Joe Saunders of Boone, IA, Jake Saunders of Ogden, IA, Blake and Alyssa Saunders of West Des Moines, IA, Ben & Jessi Fisher of Ogden, IA, Jessica and Matt Jackson of Kansas City, MO, Kit and Andrew Vortherms of Fonda, IA, Nikki and Jay Burkenbine of Grimes, IA; great-grandchildren: Riley, Meira, Nick, Andresa, Delilah, Austin, Daisha, Phoebe, Olivia, Alex, Jakobi, Henry, Brielle, Braxton, Elyse, Luke, Rylie, Parker, John, Michael, Presley, Ella, Aubree, Ashton and Daywon; sister-in-law, Chris Alexander of Boone, IA and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
