Val Cushman

Val Cushman, 69, of Ogden, Iowa, passed away on Monday, July 2, 2017, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa.

Val's wishes were to be cremated. A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Carson – Stapp Funeral Home in Ogden. Visitation will be held on Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Graveside service will be held at a later date at Altoona Cemetery. Val Cushman was born on August 11, 1947, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Gene and Evelyn (Mauch) Cushman. He graduated High School from Roosevelt High in Des Moines in 1965. Val attended one year of the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) and two years at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

Val enlisted into the United States Navy after graduating high school.

Val then worked as a conductor for several smaller railroads before joining the Chicago Northwestern Railroad which later became Union Pacific Railroad, retiring in 2010.

He was a frequent fixture at the Moose Lodge in Boone.

Survivors include his three sons, Bill (Heather) Cushman of Urbandale, Iowa, Brian Cushman of Urbandale, Iowa and Jason Cushman of Ogden, Iowa; two grandchildren, Megan and Madison; four sisters, Jan (Burk) Gensch, Kim Cushman, Lee (Don) VanderLinden, and Lyn (Sam) Samuleson; and many nieces and nephews.

Val was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Gae Clymer, and a brother, Barry Cushman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the Red Cross in Val's name.
