Alice Thompson

July 31, 1921 — February 22, 2016

Alice E. Thompson, 94 of Dayton, Iowa, passed away on Monday, February 22, 2016, at Grandview Health Care Center in Dayton.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 27, 2016, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dayton, followed by a luncheon at the Church. Pastor Michael Standfest will officiate. Private family burial will be at Colfax Township Cemetery near Vincent. Visitation will be Friday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Carson – Stapp Funeral Home in Dayton. Alice Eileen Dencklau was born on July 31, 1921, near Vincent, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Anna (Koester) Dencklau. She attended Colfax #2 Country School and St. John's Parochial School before graduating with the Fort Dodge Senior High School Class of 1938. Alice then attended Tobin Business College in Fort Dodge. Following her education, she began working at Thatcher Insurance and later J.C. Penney in Fort Dodge. Alice was united in marriage to Leonard Thompson on November 13, 1939, in Webster City, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed near Vincent until moving to a farm near Dayton in May of 1951. In 1963, Alice and Leonard moved to Lehigh and purchased the Riverside Tap. Leonard died on October 30, 1970. Alice owned and operated the Riverside Tap until 1977. In 1977, Alice moved to Vilas, Colorado, with her longtime companion, Jim Goodpaster. Jim died on March 17, 1994. Alice then moved to an apartment in Walsh, Colorado, and worked at Ben's Café and the Walsh Health Care until moving to Harcourt, Iowa, in 1998. She became a resident of Grandview Health Care Center in January of 2010.

Alice was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Dayton. Her hobbies included knitting and playing cards and bingo. She also enjoyed volunteer work, especially volunteering her time at Grandview Health Care Center in Dayton.

She is survived by two sons, Paul Thompson (Beth Hagge) of Winthrop, Iowa, and Keith (Susan) Thompson of Mesa, Arizona; three daughters, Karen (Loren) Dorman of Florida, Diane Peeler (Mike Yetmar) of Dayton, Iowa, and Lori Raymond of Dayton, Iowa; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Leonard Thompson, longtime companion, Jim Goodpaster, son, Kelly Thompson, and daughter, Marleen Webb.

All memorials will be donated to Trinity Lutheran Church in Dayton.
