Dannie Lee Sonksen

Dannie L. Sonksen, 82, of Stratford, Iowa, passed away at Southfield Wellness Community in Webster City, Iowa, on Monday, November 24, 2025.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 1, 2025, at Calvary United Methodist Church in Stratford. Pastor Justin Crocheck will officiate. Burial will follow at South Marion Cemetery, rural Stratford, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Boone Veteran's Council. Visitation will be Sunday, November 30, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., at the Church. Carson ~ Stapp Funeral Home in Dayton has been entrusted with the arrangements. www.carsonstappfuneralhome.com

Dannie Lee Sonksen was born on February 12, 1943, in Boone, Iowa, the son of Weldon and Edith (Silvey) Sonksen. He attended Stratford Schools.

In November of 1966, Dannie was drafted into the United States Army and served in Vietnam (combat infantry), and later worked as an army mechanic. He was honorably discharged in August of 1968.

Dannie was married to Janet (Sorenson) Sonksen from 1965 - 1993. They were blessed with two sons, Shane and Travis.

Dannie spent the majority of his life farming, with his father, then later with his sons in the Stratford area. He enjoyed fishing, going out to eat, traveling, and spending time with family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Delmar Sonksen.

Survivors include two sons, Shane (Angela) Sonksen of Boone, IA, and Travis Sonksen (Amy) of Stratford, IA; five grandchildren, Alexys Sonksen, Carter Sonksen, Parker Sonksen, Maddox Dodson, and Saige Sonksen; sisters, Dawn Sonksen of Boone, IA, and Dallis Sonksen (Michael Smith) of Boone, IA; and extended family.

A portion of the memorials will be donated to the Boone Area Veteran’s Center, under construction in Boone.
