Larry "Como" Reutter

Heaven just gained one of the biggest Cubs fans. Larry Wayne “Como” Reutter passed away at the age of 89 on August 2nd, 2026. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many who knew him. If he ever met you, he remembered you and could usually tell a story about a time with you.

Larry Wayne Reutter was born on July 14th, 1937, in Ogden, Iowa. He was the 8th of what would become 15 children blessed upon Donald and Mabel Reutter. He liked to tell the story of how at one point the school bus would pull up to the house and 9 kids would get on or off. He was raised on the family farm in between Boxholm and Pilot Mound, Iowa and graduated High School with the Boxholm Class of 1957.

Those of you that were blessed to know him will understand how fitting the story of him taking 3 years to get past first grade. Shortly after starting first grade, they decided to do a skin graft on an eyelid that did not form completely prior to birth. This caused him to miss a significant number of days in the fall. The decision was made to wait until next year to return to school. Well, that happened to be the year they implemented kindergarten, so he went from first grade back to kindergarten and then onto first grade for the final time.

During a junior high concert, he sang a solo and one or more of his friends referred to him as Larry Como, referring to the popular crooner from the era Perry Como. This gave birth to the legend of Como, and the rest is history.

The Cubs fan was born when the family sold cattle in Chicago and him and his grandfather, George, would ride with the semi drivers to the Chicago Stockyards. Once the cattle were sold, they would head to Wrigley. After the game they would hop a train back to Boone or Ogden. When Chad was living in Naperville in 1997, they were able to return to Wrigley for the first time since the 1950s, and luckily not much had changed. The flood of memories came back, and it was fun to see his face light up for his Cubbies.

After high school graduation, Como went to work driving a dump truck and worked on the construction of the Northern Natural Gas Facility in Redfield, Iowa. It didn’t take long and he found a way to return to his love of farming. It started small with renting a 40-acre field and over the years grew to a great partnership with his brother Jake and over 2300 acres up until retirement in 2009.

Thanks to one of his brothers dating one of her sisters, he was introduced to the love of his life, Jacqueline Marie Craven and on December 10th, 1965, they were united in marriage. Luckily her parents weren’t aware of their age gap of 7 years, until they signed the marriage license or this relationship may not have developed. They were blessed with 2 children in this marriage. They were fortunate to be able to adopt Chad Wayne Reutter in September of 1970. And Heather Marie Reutter was born into the family on November 25, 1972.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Donald (1991) and Mabel (1999), his siblings Darlene (1929), Rosella (1992), Dorothy (2007), Donna (2020), Ronnie (2008), Robert (2017), Marjorie (2023), Marilyn (2023), Gene (2022). Roberta (2022).

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Jacqueline, of Ogden. His son Chad (Courtney Hill) of Grimes. His Daughter Heather (Travis Tams) of Ankeny. Grandchildren Derek and Isabella (Chad) and Carter, Colby, and Carlyle (Heather). Siblings Leo Reutter (his Irish twin) of Boone, Gary and his wife Vickie of Dallas Center, Geraldine Martin (Barry) of Omaha, Marlene Rabern of Ogden. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who have already blessed us by sharing many memories of Uncle Como.

A Celebration of Life for Como will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 15, 2026, at the Community United Methodist Church in Ogden. Rev. Heidi Farmer & Steve Satre will officiate.
