Lars Raymond Garton was born on December 24, 1931, in Promise City, Iowa, the son of Walter and Cleo Garton.
He attended Corydon Public Schools (now Wayne Community) where he excelled in music at an early age. After graduation in 1950, he served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Whetstone in waters around Japan and North Korea.
Northeast Missouri State College (now Truman State) was his next stop where he majored in music education. During college Lars sang with the NEMO singers, a group which gave concerts throughout the Midwest. He was a member of the Blue Key National Honor Fraternity as well as several other organizations. During college he also developed a liking for golf and often helped young develop their skills at the sport. Having graduated school in 1957, with a BS in music education, he taught music at Corydon.
School administration interested Lars and he earned a Masters Degree in education from the University of Iowa and a Specialist Degree from Drake University. School administration led him to serve schools at Central City, Montezuma, Knoxville, Lohrville, and Ogden.
Lars and Mary Klinger of Corydon were married in 1959. Two children were born to them: a daughter, Cheryl and a son, Mark.
Memorials may be left to the Leonard Good Community Library.
