LaVerne I. Johnson, 80, of Clive and Pilot Mound, Iowa, passed away with family by his side on Sunday, April 7, 2019 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
A Celebration of Life for LaVerne will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 12, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Pilot Mound, Iowa with Pastor Philip Berger and Pastor Chris Waddle officiating. LaVerne Ivar Johnson, son of Ivar and Gladys (Lundberg) Johnson, was born on October 29, 1938 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He graduated with the Pilot Mound High School Class of 1956 and went on to receive a degree in Agricultural Education from Iowa State University in 1960.
Following his education, LaVerne taught Vocational Agriculture in Somers, Iowa, in the 1960’s.
He then went on to work for Equitable Agri-Business as a Farm Real Estate Lender. More recently he was a real estate broker/appraiser, all while farming the family farms in the Pilot Mound area.
On September 2, 2008 LaVerne was united in marriage to Sandi Thompson and gained two “bonus children” Kristin and Chad.
LaVerne was a lifelong Methodist who enjoyed singing in the choir as a youth, and continued to support the church in many ways throughout his life. He was a longtime member of Rotary. LaVerne was active in the communities of Pilot Mound and Rockwell City.
Survivors include his wife Sandi Johnson of Clive, Iowa; children, Karen (Tom) Johnson-Welling of Wichita, Kansas, Dan (Carla) Johnson of Nevada, Iowa, Kristin (Bryon) Tack of Urbandale, Iowa, and Chad (Darci) Thompson of Urbandale, Iowa; grandchildren, Kali Welling, Joseph Welling, Nathaniel Johnson, Caitlin Johnson, Allyson Tack, Ben Tack, Cambrie Thompson, and Jaeden Thompson; one sister, Marilyn Anderson of Dayton, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother-in-law, Leonard Anderson.
