Mary Knopf, 88, of Dayton, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2023, at UnityPoint Health ~ Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge.


Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at Carson ~ Stapp Funeral Home in Dayton. Rev. Michael Standfest will officiate. Burial will follow in the Dayton Cemetery. Mary Ann Skoog was born on May 3, 1934, in Gowrie, Iowa, the daughter of Anton and Anna (Pearson) Skoog. She was a graduate of the Dayton High School class of 1952. Mary furthered her education at Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls, where she received her teaching certificate, and later graduated from Drake University with her B.S. Degree.


On June 2, 1956, Mary was united in marriage to Gene Arthur Knopf at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Dayton. They were blessed with three children, Barbara, Kevin, and Kent.


Mary was a 4th grade teacher in the Dayton Community School System for 28 years. She belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church in Dayton where she was involved in numerous church activities. Mary was an avid reader and enjoyed playing the piano, quilting, gardening, and card games with friends and family.


In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Gene Knopf on April 22, 2022, a sister, Alice Lindsey, and two brothers, Herbert Skoog, and Robert Skoog.


Survivors include her daughter, Barbara (Tim) Kenyon of Creston, IA; two sons, Kevin (Yvonne McIntire) Knopf of Arlington, VA, and Kent (Danelle) Knopf of Granger, IA; five grandchildren, Alex (Lindsay) Kenyon, Elizabeth (Steven) Lee, Joshua Knopf, Jacob (Emma) Knopf, and Bailey Knopf; three great-grandchildren, Kenneth Lee, Margaret Lee, and Maren Kenyon and a fourth great-grandchild, baby Knopf, due to arrive in May;

and numerous nieces and nephews.


Memorials may be left to either: Trinity Lutheran Church in Dayton, or the Dayton Library.
