Twylla Glendoris Bakley Sonquist was born on November 12, 1927 and passed away on August 21, 2017 at the Kavanagh Hospice House in Des Moines, Iowa. Twylla was born, raised and lived her entire life in the Boxholm and Dayton area. At the time of her death, Twylla was a resident of the Community Care Center in Stuart, Iowa.
Twylla was dedicated to raising her daughters and managing a busy farm household with her husband, Richard Sonquist. Church was always an important part of her life with countless hours spent teaching Sunday school and vacation Bible school, participating in circle and study groups and holding multiple offices in the Evangelical United Brethren Church of Boxholm and the Dayton United Methodist Church. Twylla also served as a faithful member and Post President of the Arthur Anderson American Legion Auxiliary Post 63. She was a good friend to many including her Our Day Out (O.D.O.) Club who met faithfully each month for over 60 years.
Beginning as a young child, Twylla had a love of music. She played the trumpet through school and to honor those who gave their lives during World War II. Her church and community enjoyed her solos as well as her participation in quartets and sextets. Twylla instilled her love of music in her children and grandchildren.
Twylla took great pride in her flowers and loved watching the many birds who visited her feeders daily year around. She especially loved the goldfinches. She enjoyed traveling with Dick and they visited much of the United States on bus trips. In retirement, Dick and Twylla traveled to Alabama each winter to join fellow snowbirds in Orange Beach.
Twylla is survived by and will forever be remembered by her daughters Miriam (Mike) Schultz, Michal Bylund and Melinda (Tom) Gladitsch along with their treasured grandchildren Jacob (Mindy) Bylund, Andrea (Todd) Marshall, Maradith (Jon) Janssen, Michael (Becky) Schultz Jr., Marcia (Michael) Dahlstrom, Charles and Elizabeth Gladitsch. She will also be remembered by her fifteen great-grandchildren, her only niece and nephew, Daneen and Devin Stahl along with countless other friends and family who were blessed to know her. Twylla is preceded in death by her husband of nearly 70 years, Richard Sonquist, her parents, Bill and Eleanor Bakley, her sister, Phyllis Stahl and brother-in-law, Bob Stahl and infant brother Daniel Bakley.
