Warren Hugo Claussen

Warren Hugo Claussen, 96, passed away peacefully at Kennybrook Village in Grimes, IA on May 4, 2026.

Warren was born in Ogden, IA on June 14, 1929, the son of Walter A and Erma F (Porter) Claussen. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1946 and joined his father in operating the family Texaco station. He married Carol Thrailkill in 1951 and they celebrated 73 years of marriage before Carol’s death in 2025.

Warren enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard in 1948. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Field Artillery, in 1951. During his career he attended the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course and the Field Artillery Officer Career Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. After serving in a variety of command and staff positions, he retired from the Iowa Army National Guard in 1969 as a Major with over 20 years of service. He was a life member of the Military Officers Association of America and the National Guard Association of the United States.

In 1974 Warren graduated from Drake University at the age of 45 with a degree in business administration and accounting. He was employed for several years with an accounting firm in Des Moines. In 1978 he became a member of the staff of City State Bank in Ogden, retiring in 1992. After retirement he served on the Ogden BancShares board of directors from its inception in 1994 until 2008.

He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church of Ogden, IA, serving as Treasurer for many years. He served on the Ogden School Board for six years from 1961 to 1967. Warren served on the Ogden Telephone Co. board of directors for 22 years, from 1991 to 2013.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Carol Claussen; daughter-in-law Gwen Claussen; grandson Nick Claussen and brother-in-law Richard Handy.

He is survived by one daughter, Deb Kesse and husband Vic of Urbandale, IA; three sons, Steve Claussen and wife Linda of Altoona, IA; Dan Claussen and wife Diane of Omaha, NE; and Tom Claussen and wife Melanie of Birmingham, AL; one sister, Kathryn Handy of Ames, IA; 7 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The family will host visitation and a luncheon at Zion Lutheran Church in Ogden, IA between 11:00am and 1:00pm on Saturday July 18, 2026. A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm followed by interment at Glenwood Cemetery in Ogden. Memorials may be sent to Zion Lutheran Church, Ogden, IA or the Ogden Community Scholarship Foundation, Ogden, IA. No flowers please.

The family wishes to thank everyone for their thoughtfulness and friendship throughout Warren’s life and following his passing. The support has been a great source of comfort and is deeply appreciated. Special thanks to the pastors at Zion Lutheran Church, the staff at Kennybrook Village in Grimes, IA and Suncrest Hospice of Des Moines.
